Crags of the late Neoproterozoic South Charnwood Diorite in the foreground, near Groby, Leicestershire, UK, looking south towards Lady Hay Wood where Lower Cambrian rocks of the Brand Group crop out. As discussed by Scotney, Carney and Harwood in this part of the Proceedings, the Lower Cambrian rocks unconformably overlie the diorite. The low ground in between is primarily filled by Triassic rocks of the Mercia Mudstone Group, deposited in a palaeovalley that developed during pre-Triassic erosion when the South Charnwood Diorite was eroded into steep-sided, low-lying domes.
