Information for Librarians

Access authentication

Our site offers various types of access authentication and federated access:

  • Federated access using Shibboleth, OpenAthens, Seamless Access. (Please contact us for a list of supported Shibboleth federations.)
  • Microsoft Active Directory (MS Azure AD) using SAML.
  • IP addresses (PIv4 and IPv6).
  • Email domains using Atypon's Connect.

Please note that trials are not available to individuals, please ask your librarian or administrator to request a trial for your institution or organization.

IP addresses

The Geological Society has signed up to receive daily updates with details of IP address changes via theIPregistry.org . Please follow their guidance on how to update your IPs . Simply register yourself as a user, check your IPs and start using The IP Registry. Please email PSI at [email protected] with any queries.

Please make sure you have correctly identified ALL needed IP addresses. Those using addresses not registered will not have access to Lyell Collection: Geological Society Publications Online.

Some institutions use proxy servers to network their environment. The Geological Society needs to know which of your IP addresses are proxy IPs, otherwise proxy access will not work for those IPs. 

Registered administrators can also view or change IP addresses and LOCKSS server options directly in their Lyell profile .

Managing your account

MARC and KBART

We provide a number of bibliographic cataloguing metadata resources to promote content discoverability:

  • MARC records available in mrc format for all book series available on the Lyell Collection
  • KBART records available in .txt and .xlsx format for all journal, book series and monographs available on the Lyell Collection

MARC records and KBART files are now also added to the WorldCat® knowledge base each month to ensure the latest content selections are available to aid discoverability.

KBART records

KBART records are updated on a monthly basis if there have been any new releases.

MARC records

MARC records are available for all book series available on the Lyell Collection and are updated on a regular basis. You will require MARC record reader/loader software to add these .mrc files to your library system. Please click on the link for the collection required and save the file to your computer:

OpenAthens

The Geological Society of London Publications offers access via Open Athens. If you are part of the OpenAthens federation your users will be able to gain access to the site by choosing Institutional login and then typing in your institution's name into the relevant area. Alternatively, you can select OpenAthens from this list . OpenAthens WAYFless URLs

WAYFless (Where Are You From) URLs provide authenticated access (via OpenAthens) to journal content without requiring the user to login to the Lyell Collection.

To create a OpenAthens WAYFless URL for the Lyell Collection:

First, update the following URL's parameters: https://www.lyellcollection.org/action/ssostart?idp=&redirectUri=

  • Set the idp parameter to equal the institution's OpenAthens Entity ID
  • Set the redirectUri parameter to equal the URL of the journal or article on the Lyell Collection website

Then to URL encode allparameter values, update the following URL characters:
%3a replaces :
%2f replaces /

For example, after URL encoding, the Lyell Collection homepage URL changes from https://www.lyellcollection.org to https%3a%2f%2fwww.lyellcollection.org

RedirectUri

The redirectUri is an optional parameter. By default, users will be redirected to the Lyell Collection homepage https://www.lyellcollection.org. If included, the redirectUri parameter should be fully qualified.

To redirect to a particular journal on the Lyell Collection, append the publication's abbreviation to the main URL. For example Special Publications is sp, so the redirectUri parameter would be set to equal https://www.lyellcollection.org/journal/sp

To redirect to a specific article, change the redirectUri parameter to include the article doi, for example https://www.lyellcollection.org/doi/10.1144/SP524-2021-110

OpenURL

If you have an OpenURL link resolver, such as SFX, you can create links back to your library holdings in the reference sections of Lyell Collection: Geological Society Publications Online articles. Such links help your customers find the most appropriate copy of the article they are seeking at your institution.

You can set up your OpenURL configurations by signing in with your administrator user name and password and then choosing the Link Resolver option in the left-hand panel in My Account.

Shibboleth

To create and edit your Shibboleth Profiles, please go to the Shibboleth option in your profile

You can create Shibboleth profiles to use with your institution's subscription.

Once you have entered the EntityID, click update. Once your profile has been saved to your subscription, your users will be able to gain access to the site by selecting your federation from this list .

Shibboleth WAYFless URLs
