Browsing tips for users experiencing a slow response

Recommended browsers

We recommend that the most recent versions of Chrome and Firefox are used when viewing our sites.

Faster sign in

You can skip the sign in page by saving your user name and password to your computer. This speeds and simplifies access to material and services which require a password. Note: This option is NOT recommended if you share your computer with others (such as lab colleagues) because it would allow others to change your password and Subscriber Services.

To remove this file from your computer, use the ‘Sign Out’ option provided at the top of most pages.

To save your user information to your computer, check the ‘Auto Sign In’ box on the sign in page. Your information will be saved in an encrypted form on your local disk as a ‘cookie’ file, which is used by your browser to facilitate your access to The Lyell Collection. Other Internet sites cannot access or read the information placed in this cookie file. Please read the related tip: ‘Our Use of Cookies’ at http://www.lyellcollection.org/help/cookie-policy for a more detailed description of cookie files and how we use them.

Double Your Screen Size

In many situations it is helpful to have different sections of an article appear in two different browser windows. You can then move rapidly between the two sections, such as the Introduction and the References, similar to flipping pages in the print journal.

  1. Click and hold the mouse button on a link (in Windows, do a right-click) to call up the browser options menu.
  2. Select ‘New Window with this Link’ or ‘Open in New Window’ and release the mouse button.
  3. The selected link will open in a separate window which can be resized and moved so that it is side-by-side with the original window.
  4. Switch between these two windows by clicking on the title bar of each or by through the ‘Windows’ menu.

Note: The second window may obscure the first so that it will be necessary to move and resize the new window before both can be viewed on your monitor.

More: This technique can be helpful in many situations, for example:

  • To view the Table of Contents in a second window while reading articles in the main window, click and hold (in Windows, right-click) on the publication name link in the ‘In this issue’ box in the right-hand column.
  • To view the References list in the second window while reading the text of the article in the main window, click and hold (in Windows, right-click) on the References link in the right-hand column.

Buying a single article online

If you would like to access a paper from a Lyell Collection journal or book to which you do not have a subscription you can view and download the PDF of the paper using our pay per view option. The price of a single article and issues or volumes are displayed and are payable via a simple secure transaction.

To access a paper on a pay-per-view basis click on the 'Add to Cart' link for that article, issue or volume.

You can regain access to a paid-for article, issue or volume by clicking the link to the item in the receipt email that was sent to you or by logging into the site and locating the item that was purchased.

Refunds are available at the discretion of management. Please contact http://www.lyellcollection.org/feedback if a refund is required.

Connection problem diagnosis

What to do if you have trouble connecting to Lyell Collection: Geological Society Publications Online.

  1. If applicable, see if you can reach other web sites in your building (e.g., a server that is located in your building). If you cannot, the problem is likely in your machine; otherwise continue to the next step.
  2. See if you can reach other internet sites outside of your building. If you cannot, the problem is likely in your connection to the internet; otherwise continue to the next step.
  3. See if you can reach other west coast US internet sites, such as http://www.sun.com or http://www.apple.com. If you cannot, the problem may be in the networks in the Silicon Valley; otherwise continue to the next step.
  4. See if you can reach non-journal sites at HighWire e.g., http://home.highwire.org. If you cannot, then the problem may be with HighWire's connectivity to the internet; otherwise continue to the next step.
  5. See if you can reach another journal site at HighWire other than the journal you are currently attempting to access (e.g. http://rsnr.royalsocietypublishing.org/). If you cannot, then the problem may be with the journal software or hardware.

For problems #1-3, contact your local network administrator or your ISP (not Lyell Collection: Geological Society Publications Online).

For problems #4-5, please wait 15 minutes and try again.

How do I download to a Citation Manager?

We provide a simple and direct method of acquiring article citations and importing into personal bibliographic management software such as EndNote, etc.

To export citations with Abstracts for any Lyell Collection article to a citation manager program, the following steps are suggested:

  1. View the abstract or full-text article of interest.
  2. Click the 'Citation tools' link in the right hand column.
  3. Select the Citation Manager format you wish to save the file in and follow the instructions of your citation manager to import the reference into your personal bibliographic database.

How can I find Related Articles?

Tip: When reading an article of interest, a quick and easy way to find similar articles is through the use of the ‘Related Articles’ links in the right-hand column on the article page.

Why does the home page or the current issue never change?

We publish new issues online with the same frequency as the print edition. If you know that a new issue of the print journal has been published but don't see that issue appearing on the site you may be experiencing a caching problem.

The most likely source of this caching problem is your own computer. To remove the out-of-date pages from your cache you should clear the cache manually.

After clearing the cache you should quit your browser, restart it and return to the relevant journal homepage. If you still see the incorrect date please reload the page several times.

If these steps fail to remove the outdated page, this would suggest that your internet traffic may be going through a proxy server which is failing to update itself properly. Unfortunately, you'll need to speak with your Internet Service Provider to resolve this problem.

How can I get back to a previous page location from an article reference?

To return to the article text after clicking a reference link, click on the ‘back arrow’ icon at the start of the reference.

You can also view the Reference list in a separate window while continuing to view the article text in the main browser window. See the related tip: ‘Double Your Screen Size’ for details.

How can I search across multiple journals and books?

The Lyell Collection lets you search across multiple journals. If you enter a search term into the ‘search this publication’ box near the top right of every page, you will search that publication only. However, if you choose ‘Advanced search’ and in the Limit Results section then choose ‘Include articles from publications’ you can search across all or some of our publications.

Search help

When searching, the more specific your search, the faster it will run and the more likely it will return the article(s) of interest to you. For best results, enter the minimum amount of information necessary to uniquely identify the article or articles, such as volume/page number, authors and/or specific key words. Specific hints and tools for successful and specialized searching are described in individual sections of this help.

Simple search

You can start a simple search by typing keywords in to the ‘Search this publication’ field. If you type multiple words into this field, search results will show either 1 or more of your keywords.

To narrow your search to an exact phrase, enclose your keywords in quotation marks, e.g. “quartz monzonites”

Advanced search

General rules

There are various types of searches, with various search fields available:

  1. Specify Citation--year, volume, page, DOI
  2. Specify Author, Keywords--author, title, abstract+title, text+abstract+title, bibliography.
  3. Users can limit result using dates ranges, specific GSL publications Open Access articles.

If a search uses multiple fields, they are joined by AND in the search.

On the right-hand side of each keyword search field, users have 3 choices:

  1. Choose the ‘all’ button for when you want to search multiple words, e.g. quartz AND monzonites.
  2. Use "any" to change this to OR, e.g. quartz OR monzonites).
  3. Use "phrase" to search an exact phrase (quartz monzonites).

Other Boolean operators may also be used within the Keywords fields.

Capitalization and Punctuation

Searches are case-insensitive. Punctuation is not searched and is treated as a space.

Stemming

This search mechanism uses a "stemming" mechanism to find words which are similar to the words you enter. For example, a search on "sediment" may turn up articles containing similar words such as sediments and sedimentations. These additional words may not always be highlighted in the text. If you wish to disable stemming, enclose each individual term in quotation marks. If you do so, and also use Boolean connectors to combine terms, be sure that AND, OR, or NOT are not included in the quotation marks.

Search errors

There is one reason why you may not get any articles back from your search: there may not be any articles matching the search criteria. If your search was executed properly but did not return any articles, the message broaden the search if possible.

How can I see bigger or better figures?

Figures in the online articles are presented in three different views, each intended to provide a different level of functionality and quality. To see larger versions of the Figures click on the Figure itself or on the ‘Open in new tab’ link.

How can I read The Lyell Collection offline?

If you are using an offline browser that allows you to download content from a site and read it later, be aware that we impose one restriction on their use.

In order for us to provide reliable, continuous, and timely access to The Lyell Collection for all readers, we require that you configure your offline browser to request no more than 20 pages per minute (roughly one request every 3-4 seconds). Be aware that non-compliance with this rule will result in your access to The Lyell Collection being blocked until you contact us and resolve the problem. If you repeatedly break this rule you will be permanently blocked from the site. Access to site pages via an Open Proxy Server is prohibited.

Before attempting to use an offline browser, however, please read our ‘Browsing tips for users who are experiencing slow response’.

How do I report a problem?

If you have any questions about access, comments on the content of the site, subscription enquiries, questions about the submission of an article or any other question, please click the ‘Feedback’ link in the first column of the footer.

Social media sharing

When sharing one of our pages via Facebook, to get the publication cover and abstract to show in your share, we advise you to paste the URL into your post, wait until an image of the site appears in the post, but then leave/discard the post. Then create a new post and re-paste in the URL. When you paste in the URL for a second time Facebook has had time to scrape the URL and the publication cover image plus the abstract should now appear. This is due to Facebook's site set up and it not related to our website.
