2013 marks the 50th anniversary of the Vaiont landslide in NE Italy, viewed from upstream in the cover photograph. Part of the flanks of Monte Toc slid into a newly completed and filled reservoir, impounded behind an extremely high doubly-curved mass concrete arch dam. While the dam did not collapse, the waves and flood that resulted from the slide caused a tragically high loss of life. Research on the failure has continued right up to the present day.
