Colour - enhanced satellite image of the Zagros Mountains in southern Iran. Salt domes have pierced up to the desert surface (purple-brown) producing namakiers. They have penetrated a series of limestones and dolomites (brown and very light grey) and gypsum (blue). Martin Insley of the National Remote Sensing Centre, Farnborough, UK, (BP Archive) kindly provided this image, which is approximately 80 km wide.
